Here are five recommended reads for today (1/17/12)

  1. CleanTechnica reports, “Seven military bases in California and two in Nevada could produce a hefty 7 GW of power from renewable solar and wind power, according to an extensive study the military commissioned from ICF International.”
  2. Peter Fox Penner argues at Climate Progress: “Renewable energy standards may not be perfect, but they are an energy policy with benefits that the vast majority of American citizens recognize as worth their small cost. Legislators across America should turn their attention to our tremendous fiscal, social, and environmental challenges rather than trying to ‘fix’ renewables standards that, relatively speaking, just aren’t broken.”
  3. According to Clean Technica, “First Solar, a cadmium-telluride solar cell manufacturer, has improved the total area efficiency of CdTe (cadmium-telluride) solar modules to 14.4%, breaking the previous efficiency record of 13.4% (also set by First Solar).”
  4. Energy Boom reports, “The U.S. Department of Interior and the State of California have both renewed and expanded a partnership that seeks to expedite renewable energy projects in California. Launched in 2009, the partnership has helped facilitate bringing over 130 renewable energy projects to the Golden State including more than 12 utility-scale solar energy projects. Formed as part of the original agreement the partnership works through the Renewable Energy Policy Group (REPG) to expedite review and processing of proposed projects.”
  5. The U.K. Minister for Climate Change writes in The Guardian about “the pioneering green deal, unleashing real competitive forces in the energy efficiency market.”
