Must-Read Piece in Rolling Stone: “The Scam Behind the Gas Boom” | ScalingGreen

Must-Read Piece in Rolling Stone: “The Scam Behind the Gas Boom”

The current edition of Rolling Stone has a superb, must-read expose of what they call “The Big Fracking Bubble: The Scam Behind the Gas Boom.”  It’s certainly gotten the attention of the story’s top culprit, Chesapeake Energy, which is working hard to discredit it.  No wonder they’re worried, given everything the article uncovers. A few highlights:

  • “Chesapeake and its lesser competitors resemble a Ponzi scheme, overhyping the promise of shale gas in an effort to recoup their huge investments in leases and drilling.”
  • “[Chesapeake owner Aubrey] McClendon’s primary goal is not to solve America’s energy problems, but to build a pipeline directly from your wallet into his.”
  • “This, in essence, is the mantra at Chesapeake: Everything we do is safe and environmentally responsible. Trust us.”
  • “The problem with all sophisticated technology, of course, is that things inevitably go wrong…Well failures, in fact, are fairly common at drilling sites.”
  • “As fracking has come under increasing attack, McClendon has used his financial clout to keep the drills pumping. Chesapeake spent only $2 million on federal lobbying last year – about average for a company its size – but it has contributed almost as much to political candidates and PACs in the current election cycle as the Koch brothers.”
  • If the bubble bursts, Chesapeake’s stockholders won’t be the only ones who pay the price – the shock waves will be felt throughout the economy, from homeowners who rely on natural gas for heat to manufacturers who were betting on it to power their new factories. “

We strongly recommend that you read the entire article, as it’s a real eye-opener to how we’re all getting “fracked” by this powerful industry. Nice job, Rolling Stone.
